Conference on the potential of new genetic improvement technologies in the agricultural and food sector

12 de Mayo de 2025 09:30 - 15:15
Descripción

NTGs are innovative tools that can contribute to increasing the resilience and sustainability of the agri-food sector. They enable the development of plant varieties that are better adapted to the effects of climate change, with fewer input requirements, improved quality, and higher yields, among other traits.

On 14 March 2025, the Member States of the European Union reached an agreement on the proposed regulation on plants obtained through certain new genomic techniques and their products, giving the European Council the mandate to negotiate the final text of the regulation with the European Parliament.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) recognizes the opportunity this regulatory review represents to provide Spanish farmers with new tools to address current challenges, contribute to open strategic autonomy, and increase the sustainability and security of EU food systems.

This event is part of the activities that MAPA and the Center for Research in Agricultural Genomics (CRAG) will develop after initiating a collaboration on a pioneering scientific advisory project.

Organized by:

The Subdirectorate General for Agricultural Production Means and the Spanish Plant Varieties Office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) , within the framework of the CAP Network , coordinated by the Subdirectorate General for Agricultural Policy Planning.

Objectives of the day:

  • Present the scientific advisory project on new genomic techniques carried out by MAPA and CRAG;
  • To promote new genomic techniques as an innovative tool that can contribute to increasing the resilience and sustainability of the agri-food system;
  • Learn about innovative developments with these technologies and reflect on their potential for the agri-food sector;
  • Delve into the regulatory framework for these new techniques;
  • Discuss with representatives of the agri-food chain the potential of new genomic techniques

Target audience:

The event is aimed at entities in the agri-food sector and other stakeholders or entities interested in the topic.

Participation modality:

The event will be held in a mixed format:

  • In person at the auditorium of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries (Paseo de Infanta Isabel, 1, Madrid).
  • Online via streaming .

Attendance at the event is free and prior registration is required.
