- The POMODORO Operational Group offers producers key tools to adapt to the challenges of industrial tomato cultivation.
- Seven entities join forces to achieve three goals: economic, social, and environmental sustainability.
The agricultural sector faces increasingly complex challenges due to factors such as climate variability and the need for sustainable production criteria. In this context, the POMODORO Operational Group was created , an innovative supra-regional project designed to offer advanced technological solutions and sustainable agricultural practices that not only benefit producers but also increase the economic, social, and environmental value of the entire production chain.
With the goal of driving innovation and ensuring the sector's profitability, the POMODORO Operational Group (GO) offers producers key tools and knowledge to adapt to the challenges of industrial tomato cultivation. This project represents a unique opportunity to promote sustainability, optimize resource use, and improve product quality, contributing to the strengthening of a more resilient and competitive agriculture.
What are they researching regarding industrial tomatoes?
These entities work together to achieve three main objectives:
- Agricultural sustainability : Implement advanced techniques such as irrigation sensors and semi-buried systems to optimize water use and minimize losses.
- Productive innovation : developing new nutrition and irrigation solutions that increase crop quality and energy efficiency.
- Comprehensive value : increasing the economic, social and environmental value of the entire industrial tomato production chain.
Benefits for the sector
1. Direct technology transfer to the sector, facilitating access to innovative tools.
2. Sustainable management of water and soil , adapted to current climate and resource conditions.
3. Optimization of the production chain , contributing to greater profitability and preventing agricultural abandonment.
Components and financing
It is a consortium made up of seven entities that contribute their knowledge and experience to the agricultural sector:
• AZUD
• TEPRO and TEPRO Extremadura SL
It has an investment of almost 600,000 euros, of which 80% is financed by the European Union , through the EAFRD (European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development) , and the remaining 20% is provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) , within the framework of the Strategic Plan of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) 2023-2027 . This financing is key to guaranteeing the success and implementation of the proposed solutions, promoting a more sustainable and competitive future for the tomato agricultural sector in Spain.
