The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food is planning the third edition of the National Film and Rural Women's Series.

09/10/2020. The third edition of the National Rural Women's Film Series, organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA), will take place between October 14 and November 5. This year, it combines free digital broadcasts and in-person screenings.


  • For the first time, it combines in-person screenings with digital broadcasts.
  • Seven film libraries from seven Spanish cities are collaborating in the cycle.
  • It offers a current perspective, far from clichés, on the world and rural women.

In total, there will be 13 feature-length and short films, both fiction and documentary. All of them will be shown at participating theaters in several cities: CGAI (Galician Center for Image Arts) in La Coruña; Albacete Film Library; Extremadura Film Library in Cáceres; Murcia Film Library; Cine Doré in Madrid; Cantabria Film Library in Santander; and Zaragoza Film Library.

The program will provide an insight into the reality and contemporary problems of rural areas through a group of new directors, unconventional and unconventional, who share their stories. Their stories will allow the audience to gain a more truthful view of the reality of women in this context.

The Director General of Rural Development, Innovation and Agri-Food Training, Isabel Bombal, will open the series on October 14 at the Cine Doré with the film Orgullo (1955), one of Manuel Mur Oti's masterpieces and considered the first European western.

The following day, several titles will be shown in different locations:

  • Cantabria Film Library: Amama , by Asier Altuna, premiered in 2015 at the San Sebastian Film Festival.
  • Murcia Film Library: Innocence (2019), by Lucía Alemany, premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival and nominated in several categories for the Goya, Gaudí and Forqué awards.
  • Extremadura Film Library: Women of the Sea (2015) and Women of the Countryside (2019), by Marta Solana.
  • Zaragoza Film Archive: Les Perseides (2019), by Ànnia Gabarró and Alberto Dexeus, premiered at the Gijón Festival.

On October 20th, the Filmoteca de Galicia (CGAI) will screen Oliver Laxe's film O que arde (2019), which won an award at Cannes and Goya Awards for Best New Actress and Best Cinematography, among numerous other accolades. This film has just been selected as a
one of the three Spanish candidates for the Oscars.

Finally, on November 5, the day the cycle ends, the Albacete Film Library will screen Andromedas (2019), by Clara Sanz, which participated in the Gijón Festival.

The free digital program will be available from October 15 to 21 through the website www.cineymujeresrurales.es , with a maximum of 1,000 simultaneous viewings. It includes the following titles:

  • Arima (2019) by Jaione Camborda, winner of the 'New Waves' section of the Seville European Film Festival.
  • The Brown Wolf (2019, documentary), by Cristina Ortega Blanco, presented at the Seminci in Valladolid.
  • The Perseids (2019).
  • The sounds of loneliness (2015), by Cristina Ortega Blanco.
  • Women of the Sea (2015, documentary), by Marta Solana.
  • Women of the Countryside (2019, documentary), by the same director.
  • Black Eyes (2019) by Marta Lallana and Ivet Castelo, awarded at the Malaga Festival.
  • Os fillos da vide (2017, documentary), by Ana Domínguez.

Since its inception, this cycle, which is part of the MAPA Awards for Excellence in Innovation for Rural Women, has been a tribute to women in this field, which also contributes to making the rural environment more visible and making the inhabitants of towns and cities share their ways of life.
