We now know the winners of the 8th edition of the Rural Women's Excellence in Innovation Awards 2017.
These awards were created to raise awareness of the activities carried out by rural women, given their importance in establishing population in the region. The award-winning projects all have in common: they are managed by women and promote the diversification of economic activity and innovation in agricultural activity.
The Excellence Award for the Diversification of Economic Activity in Rural Areas is awarded to Judith Naves Morán for her ASTURsabor project , developed in Las Regueras (Asturias), which is based on the artisanal and traditional preparation of cooked dishes with native Asturian products. This family business offers high-quality products, as all the raw materials used are raised free-range in Asturias. They have their own livestock of native Asturian animals, but they also collaborate with Breeders' Associations of native breeds and with other entrepreneurs, such as those in the cider, wine, and beer industries. This ability to make innovative changes without losing sight of artisanal production is combined with their vision to identify new trends and approaches in the market: gourmet products, home catering, etc. They currently sell in more than 40 stores, in large supermarkets and gourmet shops, and have initiated international contacts as a long-term objective. Furthermore, they collaborate with the Autonomous University of Madrid on research into native fauna.
The award for excellence in innovation in agricultural activity The award was given to Maite Sánchez Hernández thanks to her Domiña project in Goizueta (Navarra). The great innovation of the Domiña project lies in its diversification. This family business has opted to save a native breed (the Betizu) and the direct sale of the meat they raise, certifying it as organic, and living and working on a farmhouse, seeking new sales channels. Thus, in addition to the production and direct sale of the product at fairs in 1 kg vacuum-packed packages with organic certification, they have added catering operations. Thus, they recently leased a bar-restaurant conceived as a place to sell the meat they produce. This catering project offers the opportunity to reach visitors who come to this area of Navarra, involving them not only in the meat, but also in the themes of the entire process: native breed, cow breeding, organic food, forest conservation, etc.
This year's award for excellence in communication goes to Grupo Promotor Salmantino SA for its Revista de la Gaceta de Salamanca magazine . This magazine reaches rural areas through a supplement published every Tuesday and a daily news page on the sector. Its news highlights include those dedicated to the world of women, with articles on the experiences of female farmers, ranchers, and businesswomen that can help other women in their future agricultural, livestock, and business development.
The extraordinary rural women's innovation award goes to Ganaderas en Red ( Livestock Women in Network) . This award seeks to highlight the importance of these types of locally generated activities that allow for the dissemination of activities of interest to the livestock farmers themselves, who share experiences through social media. Ganaderas en Red was created two years ago, and today nearly one hundred women from all over Spain belong to this group. It is made up of shepherds and extensive livestock farmers who have come together to champion the important role of women in the countryside through social media. Their objectives include moving women from the permanent invisibility to the forefront, having a voice where important decisions are made, breaking with the completely masculinized image of extensive livestock farming and shepherding, ensuring respect for women as livestock farmers, and overcoming the familial, social, administrative, and professional discrimination they suffer. But also, as part of a network, they aim to exchange livestock experiences, working together to find solutions, discuss livestock problems, and research the virtues and likely hallmarks of female management of extensive livestock farms.
Congratulations to all!
