This app offers information and accessibility for non-expert users. It allows for the quick and easy virtual calculation of local agroclimatic indicators based on climate projections for local decision-making.

  • The LIFE AgriAdapt team has developed a tool that provides local agroclimatic data anywhere in Europe.
  • The "CANARI" tool is designed to support local farmers in improving their knowledge of the risks they will face in the face of climate change.

The environmental challenges currently facing the agricultural sector often involve finding solutions through innovation projects. Thanks to this initiative, the LIFE AgriAdapt initiative has developed the CANARI tool to help the agricultural sector prevent the consequences of climate change. This is a free web portal for industry professionals that allows them to quickly and easily calculate local agroclimatic indicators from climate projections anywhere in Europe. The information it provides is sufficiently robust for local decision-making.

The LIFE AgriAdapt project team, led by the Global Nature Foundation in Spain together with the Copernicus initiative - the European Union's initiative for Earth Observation -, developed in 2022 a tool, "Agroclimatic Indicators Explorer for Europe from 1979 to 2100" / AWA platform - AgriAdapt Webtool for Adaptation" , which is now evolving into the so-called CANARI .

Computer application

"CANARI is an app with an information profile and accessibility for non-expert users, while maintaining a high level of scientific rigor. "This could make a difference in future decision-making in the agricultural sector," explains Jordi Domingo, project coordinator of the Global Nature Foundation.

CANARI offers more than a hundred "Agroclimatic Indicators" (ACIs) that cover the needs of different crop types or agricultural sectors. Furthermore, a higher geographic resolution has been achieved, covering all of Europe (except the Atlantic islands).

Characteristics

The Advantages offered by CANARI are the following:

  • High geographic resolution (Europe).
  • A simple and rapid deployment of scientifically validated climate projections for all of Europe.
  • Multiple “Agroclimatic Indicators” (IAC), which cover the needs of different agricultural sectors (arable crops, livestock, permanent crops, etc.).
  • The ability to freely modify the parameters of each predefined IAC to tailor the query to local issues.
  • Instant IAC calculations.
  • Multi-model approach for various climate scenarios.
  • The development of these indicators over the period 2020-2050 (near future) to better understand the future variability of the various climate parameters, but also over the period 2050-2100 (distant future) to understand the long-term consequences.
