The LIFE Programme is the only European Union financial instrument dedicated exclusively to the environment and climate action. Since its inception in 1992, more than 900 LIFE projects have been approved in Spain (5,400 projects across the EU), with a total budget of €1.555 billion and an EU contribution of €781 million in Spain.

  • This is the first batch of projects selected within the new 2021-2027 period.
  • There are still 3 more LIFE calls to be released this December 2021 for the new period.

The LIFE programme recently revalidated its Environment and Climate Action Programme for the 2021-2027 period . To launch this new framework, the European Commission (EC) has just approved an initial investment package for 132 projects worth more than €290 million. This funding comes from the €562 million allocated by the European Union to the LIFE programme in the new period and will cover projects across the continent that contribute to achieving a climate-neutral region by 2050.

The approved projects focus on the environment and resource efficiency (45 projects); nature and biodiversity (39 projects); environmental governance and information (6 projects); climate change mitigation and adaptation (34 projects); and governance and information (8 projects).

Project examples

A transnational project will restore degraded peatlands in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Poland . The project is expected to restore the peatlands' carbon sink function, contributing to the EU's ambition to become climate-neutral by 2050.

Another project will feature Italian chefs promoting climate-smart, nutritious, and affordable diets. This project contributes to the Farm to Fork Strategy, the Circular Economy Action Plan, and the Waste Framework Directive.

A Bulgarian project will protect breeding, wintering, and migratory bird populations by reducing deaths due to electrical infrastructure. They will identify the highest-risk medium-voltage power lines and replace overhead lines with underground cables in the most important sections.

A Polish project will demonstrate the feasibility of using renewable energy to cool public buildings, while another in France will establish an innovative system to optimize resource use and recover waste from local construction and public works projects.

Call for Proposals 2021

LIFE calls for proposals are published on the Funding and Tendering Opportunities Portal .

Calls for proposals are open for:

  • Nature and biodiversity
  • Circular economy and quality of life
  • Mitigation and adaptation to climate change
  • Clean energy transition
  • Operating grants for non-profit organizations

Three more LIFE calls will be launched in December 2021 :

  1. Other actions / A Biodiversity Small Grants Facility (BEST): small grants in the outermost regions and overseas territories on biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration and sustainable use of ecosystem services, including ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation and mitigation.
  2. Other actions/projects responding to specific EU legislative and policy priorities (PLPs) under the Nature/Biodiversity and Circular Economy/Quality of Life subprogrammes . In addition, support will be provided to the network of National Contact Points (NCPs) under the LIFE Programme.
  3. Technical Assistance/Capacity Building Projects for Member State Authorities with Low Effective Participation (TA-CAP): These projects aim to strengthen the capacity of Member State authorities to enhance effective participation in the LIFE programme.

The expected opening date for the three calls is 12/16/2021 .
