Film is a tool for telling stories, sharing experiences, and exploring diverse realities. In rural areas, it also allows us to give visibility to the women who are the protagonists of their territories, to their personal and professional journeys, and to the connections they maintain with the communities where they live.

With this objective, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) has organized the ninth edition of the National Film and Rural Women Cycle , which will take place from October 15 to November 15, 2026. This year, the initiative reaches 530 locations throughout the country and includes 1,097 screenings and 461 activities , with a program that combines film, meetings, and cultural offerings adapted to the different regions.

The cycle unfolds in two simultaneous modalities, but with differentiated proposals: the in-person one, with screenings and activities in different Spanish locations, and the virtual one, which offers a specific selection of films free of charge through the official website and which can be viewed from Spain and 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Films that showcase the diversity of rural areas

The in-person program features 12 recent Spanish films that place rural women at the heart of their stories. Through diverse genres and cinematic languages, the works explore their everyday experiences and their relationship with the land, moving away from stereotypes associated with rural life. Among the themes explored in the selection are:

  • Rootedness and generational change, through stories about the continuity of family activities and the decisions to stay or leave.

  • Memory and traditional knowledge, with stories that recover knowledge passed down between generations and ways of life linked to the territory.

  • Care and personal relationships, which explore family ties, the experiences of women of different ages, and community life.

  • Identity and social transformation, with perspectives on the opportunities and difficulties of living in villages and the changes that their communities experience.

Taken together, the selection offers different perspectives on rural women and their territories, and invites reflection on their experiences, their links with the land, and the challenges and possibilities that are part of their daily lives.

Cinema as a meeting point in the territories

A total of 29 sessions will include presentations and discussions with female directors and film industry professionals, who will share their experiences and creative processes with the public. In addition, the venues and collaborating organizations will host more than 400 activities , including workshops, exhibitions, concerts, tastings of local products, craft markets, film screenings and discussions, and short film competitions.

These proposals complement the screenings and encourage local participation, linking cinema with the cultural life of the territories and creating spaces to share experiences and reflect on the rural environment.

Programming accessible to a wider audience

For the third consecutive year, the cycle will reach senior residences, with screenings planned in 143 centers to bring culture closer to people who may have more difficulty accessing these proposals.

The program also includes a free virtual showcase , available from October 17 to 31 on the official website, with 13 feature films and short films accessible from Spain and 13 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Uruguay.
