January 27, 2020 - 2018 marks 50 years since the creation of the General Statistics on Forest Fires and 20 years since the creation of the Integrated Forest Fire Prevention Teams of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food.

The Forest Fire Statistics , coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) and fed by data submitted by the autonomous communities, is today the most important fire database in the world , considering the length of the data series , as well as the volume and variety of information it contains . These 50 years have made it possible to document more than 590,000 fires that occurred in Spain, compiling essential information to understand the fire phenomenon and adapt measures to manage them. Today it continues to be a work in constant improvement, based on technology and innovation.

The Integrated Forest Fire Prevention Team Program (EPRIF) was launched in 1998 to address the problem of fires in areas with a high level of traditional fire use. Teams were created with a comprehensive view of the area and its problems, serving as a liaison between the population and the administration, with the primary mission of reconciling interests . Currently, there are 18 teams belonging to the TRAGSA company and coordinated by the MAPA (National Forestry Association). They have held more than 9,800 meetings with administrations and associations of ranchers, farmers, hunters, and other groups, as well as more than 1,300 training activities for different groups and carried out 10,000 hectares of prescribed burns, always in collaboration with the relevant authorities.

The commemoration ceremony, held on November 20, concluded with recognition from MAPA, addressing individuals and organizations that have worked and continue to work to continuously improve knowledge of forest fires and their prevention in direct contact with the rural population:

Mr. José Eleazar Cubo María, a MAPA staff member, has been systematically and rigorously involved in general forest fire statistics for over 20 years, essential for a true understanding of the forest fire phenomenon.

Mr. Francisco Tejedor Jordán , a forestry agent of the Generalitat Valenciana , promoter of research into the causes of fires in Spain, and disseminator of this knowledge among forestry, environmental agents and other Spanish groups, whose role is essential in the defense against fires.

The Comprehensive Forest Fire Prevention Teams , represented by their coordinator, Ms. Nuria Rejas Hernán, for their important role in approaching the reality of rural areas and working together with their inhabitants to reduce the problem of fires .

At the end of the day, a specially designed exhibition was presented to raise awareness about forest fires among children and adults.
