This Nature Trail was promoted by the Palencia Provincial Council and its fundamental objective is to complement the local leisure offerings, specifically linked to and complementing the existing cultural, heritage, and environmental aspects. It is worth noting that this route connects with the two branches of the Canal de Castilla, making it a wide corridor.

The creation of this route will allow for a diverse range of social uses (hiking, pedestrian, cycling, etc.), promoting the preservation of cultural and traditional heritage and boosting the socioeconomic development of rural areas by attracting residents through the revaluation and revitalization of the population centers included in the route. All this without negatively impacting the environment they traverse.

To define the planned routes, the disused railway line that connected Castromocho with Palencia was used, so the works consisted of:

  • Clearing and cleaning the land.
  • Scarifying, profiling and compacting the existing platform.
  • Scarifying, profiling, compacting the ballast and topdressing it.
  • Actions on the road surface: gravel, concrete pavements.
  • Reconstruction of overpasses.
  • Drainage works: gutters, manholes, inlets, sewer cleaning, drains, etc.
  • Execution of protections: railings, fences and milestones.
  • Placement of informative, preventive and directional signage and placement of furniture.

This project has been funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food, and the Environment, through the General Directorate of Rural Development and Forestry Policy, as part of the Natural Trails program.
