The European Atlas of Forest Tree Species is the first comprehensive publication on this essential environmental resource: our forest trees. Forest scientists and professionals contributed to the numerous stages of this atlas' development: collecting field data on species locations, developing distribution and potential location maps, producing photographic material, and compiling the various chapters.

Trees, like other life forms, adapt to the conditions of their habitat. This adaptation is reflected in the shape of their leaves, their seeds, and their dissemination and expansion strategies. Each chapter of the Atlas includes a description of the species, as well as high-quality graphics and photographs showing the climatic characteristics and unique features of each forest tree species.

The European Atlas of Forest Tree Species also includes a dynamic database with information on European species, their use, threats, and the changes that climate change may eventually bring to our forests. This first edition of the European Atlas of Forest Tree Species will soon be followed by the publication of an online version, which will incorporate updated information on forest resources and their distribution. In this way, the European Atlas of Forest Tree Species will be continuously updated with new information available on the species.
