01/07/2019 – Ecotourism, conservation, public-private cooperation, symbiosis, and differentiation are terms discussed at a meeting organized by the National Rural Network, in coordination with the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, and dedicated to the Ecological Transition, in the municipality of Almodóvar del Campo, Ciudad Real.
The Sustainable Tourism Recognition System in the Natura 2000 Network presented at the conference is a voluntary adhesion tool that translates into the implementation of good practices and commitments that must be met by the managers of the Natura 2000 Network and the tourism companies located in the areas of influence of the Protected Natural Areas of the Natura 200 Network where they are implemented. Through training activities and compliance with a series of requirements, companies will improve the sustainability of their activities and receive training on how to communicate the added value of their ecotourism offering to their clients.
This Sustainable Tourism Accreditation System was promoted and presented at the session by the relevant ministerial representatives. The meeting served as a space for exchanging information and working proposals from different locations across the country in their commitment to promoting the enjoyment of nature tourism through the sustainable use of protected areas.
The The Association for Sustainable Development of the Alcudia Valley , the Ciudad Real region where the event was held, will be coordinating a regional cooperation project aimed at implementing the Sustainable Tourism Recognition System in Natura 2000 areas in each participating territory.
For its part, the Spanish Ecotourism Club , which will collaborate on the LEADER cooperation project, is an initiative bringing together companies and destinations that practice combining the conservation of natural spaces with the provision of tourism services. This and other experiences were presented throughout the session , showcasing ecotourism products in natural spaces that are offered to both national and international tourists. The number of environmentally conscious tourists is increasing , which represents a great opportunity for the development of profitable business activities that coexist respectfully with environmental conservation. With this objective, the club is promoting access to sustainable tourism certification systems, such as the one presented at the event and the already well-known European Charter for Sustainable Tourism , both of which are mutually compatible. Maintaining these certificates by the public administration has been called for as essential to achieving the desired results. Furthermore, the relevance of balanced progress in implementing the certification throughout Spain has also been called for.
"The implementation of this adhesion certificate will require a coordinated effort and commitment from the managers of natural areas," said Ricardo Blanco, of the Subdirectorate General for Tourism Development and Sustainability of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism . This networking will result in greater awareness among the population regarding the conservation of protected natural areas and the economic development of the territories involved , halting their depopulation .
